Familysearch Indexing of Digitized Films
In case you didn't know, the LDS project for digitizing films is going much faster than anyone expected. They have now begun projects where volunteers can extract documents online using special software that you can download. I did it tonight just to see what it was like and it is amazingly simple to do. It looks like it is mostly the 1900 census for the moment. I think this has to do with the standardization of the documents which makes it possible for volunteers with minimal or no training to find the information and enter it correctly.

Updated Nuestros Ranchos User Guide
(Espanol sigue abajo)
I have updated the English version of the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide. It is still not complete but I have updated previously written sections which were outdated and written up what I think are some very important features such as using the Films Database and Searching the GEDCOM database. I have also added an appendix which shows three standard genealogy reports: Ahnentafel, Pedigree Chart and Register so that members can have examples of what genealogy reports should look like. Ideally the reports in your genealogy folder should be in one of these formats for easy sharing with other members.
I strongly suggest that any new members download the guide and print it out to have as a guide of what resources are available on the site and how to make the best use of it. I am hoping to get the changes translated soon.

Call for old photos and documents
As part of the remake of the Nuestros Ranchos site that I would like to do over the next few months, I would like to redo the "main image" of the site to include names of places that we cover written in very old documents, i.e. parrish records or wills. I have plenty of scans from my area around Colotlan and Tlaltenango but would like to include some from Los Altos, Aguascalientes and northern Zacatecas. If anybody has any old photos of towns in these areas or scans of documents where the names of towns are written out, can you please email them to me or upload them to the Albums section?
PAF Help
Let's say you have a PAF file you are unfamiliar with. How would you?:
1) Find specific locations within the file? Say I was hunting for any
individual whose roots are in Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes
Esparza in Calvillo
Does a Nicasio or Narciso Esparza ring a bell? Is Nicasio a name? (est. birth 1810) in Calvillo, Ags. Bill does do you have this person as a descendant of Lope Ruiz de Esparza? Any help is appreciated
Miguel Caldera's Mother
Linda:
Miguel Caldera's mother is simply called Maria in the documents where she appears. I believe this includes Miguel's will where he leaves a donation to a church for masses to be prayed for her soul. She was a Guachichil indian woman who must have died soon after bearing Miguel and Maria as they appear to have been raised by Franciscans in the newly established mission in Zacatecas. Miguel must have been one of the first mestizos born in what came to be known as Zacatecas.
