Ferrer v Ferrel Carmel v Carmen

I have a set of greats Bicente Ferrer (Ferrel) Diaz and Maria del Carmen (Carmel) Rodriguez. I see the spelling of both names going back and forth from Ferrer to Ferrel and from Carmen to Carmel. Has anyone else seen this?
