Saludos Primos y Primas,

In another thread (Question regarding the Mollinedo and Villasenor line.), among other things, we discussed the family of Gaspar Martin Barragan and how we don't know what branch of the Martin Barragans he belongs to. Here's what the family looks like:

Gaspar Martin Barragan cc Teresa de Torres y Maciel

  • Maria Manuela Barragan cc Eduardo Francisco Cobian, married in Tamazula 2/9/1755
  • Jose Francisco Barragan cc Aurelia Gertrudis Ortiz de Zarate, married in Tamazula 5/4/1756
  • Vicente Barragan cc Ana Josefa Petra de Cobian, married in: Tamazula 7/11/1757
  • Antonia Barragan cc Miguel de Villasenor y Jaso, married in Tamazula 2/7/1762

  • Based on the info above and baptismal records, this family moved around Tamazula, Zapotlan el Grande, and Tizapan el Alto. The question is who were the parents of Gaspar Martin Barragan and Teresa de Torres y Maciel? The answer lies in the documents related to a capellania that was founded by Juan Martin Barragan, an uncle of Gaspar Martin Barragan. Here's the link to that capellania:

Capellania fundada por Juan Martin Barragan

The capellania is a treasure-trove of information for this family. In it we learn that Juan Martin Barragan, Gaspar's uncle, used to own La Hacienda de San Diego de Zitala, that he bought directly from Diego de Villasenor Bocanegra for the amount of 10,000 pesos.

We also learn that the parents of Gaspar Martin Barragan were:

Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Sanchez Banales (Daughter of Juan Sanchez Banales cc Catalina de Alcaraz)

We also discover that the parents of Teresa de Torres y Maciel were:

Sebastian de Torres cc Francisca Maciel

The question now is, who was Diego Martin Barragan that married Antonia Sanchez Banales?

For now, I don't have an answer. However, here are some clues:

  • We know that Antonia Sanchez Banales was baptized in Tamazula on 7/20/1687.

  • We know that there were at least two Martin Barragan families in Tamazula around the same time-frame as the Sanchez Banales, circa 1680-1720s, Juan Martin Barragan cc Micaela Balbuena and Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Mendez de Torres

  • Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Mendez de Torres can't be the father of Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Sanchez Banales because he already had another son name Diego who married Efigenia de Ochoa and had children around the same time as Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Sanchez Banales, nor did he remarry as Efigenia de Ochoa lived long after Gaspar Martin Barragan was born.

  • We know that whoever fathered Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Sanchez Banales, also had to have fathered Juan Martin Barragan cc Maria de la Parra.

  • The above clues might point to Juan Martin Barragan cc Micaela Balbuena as the possible father of Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Sanchez Banales, the timeline works. However, there's no proof that I've found of this. I'll keep looking, but, I wanted to see if anyone else has any clues as to who fathered Diego Martin Barragan cc Antonia Sanchez Banales and Juan Martin Barragan cc Maria de la Parra.

    Thanks,

    Daniel Serna Valencia
